Don't Overlook Regular Eye Exams

Eye health is an important aspect of overall health and not one to be overlooked.

That's why Ophthalmologist Dr. James Stroh with EvergreenHealth Eye Care stresses the importance of regular eye check-ups, year-long eye protection and preventing eye strain.

Dr. Stroh says that even if you don't have poor vision, it is still critical to have your eyes examined every two years by a professional until age 60 when they become even more important.

Your Eye Health Impacts

The health of your body, from head to foot, is connected in so many ways. If one of part of your body is unhealthy, it will inevitably impact another part of your body.

Your eyes are no different. In a recent study, cataract removal surgery was shown to reduce a person's risk of developing dementia by roughly 30%.

The results of the study added to the numerous benefits of regularly getting your eyes checked.

Looking Out for Your Eyes

Protecting your eyes from the sun year-round, preventing eye strain from technology and leading a healthy lifestyle with good diet and exercise can keep your eyes healthy.

Your biennial routine eye exam will also help ensure you are kept up to speed on what is good and bad for your eyes.

For instance, a common eye health myth is that blue light, which is emitted from screens, is bad for your eyes. The screens on your cellphone, TV or laptop aren't bad for your eyes, but it is common strain your eyes by looking at these screens for too long without blinking.

To avoid discomfort in your eyes, use the "20-20-20" rule: take a break from the screen every 20 minutes and shift your eyes to something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Choosing the Right Eye Care Specialist

Knowing the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist can be very helpful when it comes time to schedule your eye exam.

Optometrists can offer you primary vision care including sight tests as well as diagnosis, treatment and management of your vision changes.

An ophthalmologist specializes in medical and surgical eye care. Your ophthalmologist can diagnose and treat your eye disease like cataracts and perform eye surgery to treat severe conditions.

For your biennial eye exam, you'll likely start with an optometrist. They can then refer you to an ophthalmologist if you need specialized care.
