Healthy & Fun Treat Alternatives for Your Trick-or-Treaters

Halloween is right around the corner, and if you haven't already picked up a bag of goodies to hand out to trick-or-treaters, you may want to consider non-sugary alternatives.
While research shows there's likely no such thing as a sugar rush, too much sugar can have negative impacts on a child's health and mood.
You may be worried your house or those near you will be outraged at your lack of name brand candy, but we've put together a list of options that will still keep the kids happy.
Healthy & Fun Treat Alternatives
Juice Boxes
Look for organic juice boxes at the grocery store to hand out Halloween night. These are practical and will help keep trick-or-treaters hydrated as they go door-to-door. Brands that have few ingredients and no added sugars will ensure you're helping limit sugar intake.
Spooky Tangerines
Another healthy alternative is tangerines or small oranges, which if you're feeling extra crafty you can decorate to look like carved pumpkins. Just be sure to not peel the fruit before you decorate!
Trinkets and Tchotchkes
Items like stickers, bouncy balls and slinkies are great candy alternatives, encouraging children to be active and creative while limiting their sugar intake. Look to buy these items in bulk to save money and, since there's no expiration date on toys, have extras for another holiday or even next year's Halloween.
Trail Mix
You can typically find small, pre-sealed bags of trail mix at your local grocery store. These bags of nuts and dried fruit are packed with nutrients and are a perfect tasty treat to keep your children energized while avoiding processed sugar.
Cheese Sticks
Although you'll need to store this option in the fridge in preparation for Halloween night, cheese sticks or individually packaged cheese slices can be a fun and unique treat. Plus, cheese is packed with healthy protein can calcium.
Scary Crafts
Crayons, coloring markers and water paints are also a great option to keep older kids excited and get their creativity flowing. You can also opt for mini-Play-Doh, which can also spark a child's imagination while not taking a toll on the wallet.
Remember to think creatively about your treat option on Halloween, and do your best to limit your child's sugar intake.
