The holiday season can be hectic, but you have the power to make your own choices. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, take charge by planning ahead and using these tools to help you navigate through the season. You can relish the festivities and maintain your nutrition goals.

  1. Follow the "80/20 Rule." Make 80% of your meals whole, unprocessed foods and leave room for the 20% that lets you savor the holiday treats/indulgent meals.
  2. Don't skip meals! Skipping meals might seem like an easy way to cut calories, but it can backfire and set you up for poor food choices and overeating later on. If you are looking to try intermittent fasting, check out our guide.
  3. Pre-snack before events. Before the festivities, eat a high protein snack or light meal to avoid feeling over-hungry when you arrive. A good example would be a protein shake, protein bar, or Greek yogurt. Looking to eat more veggies? We have 10 tips and strategies to help you incorporate more vegetarian snacks and meals into your diet.
  4. Be selective. Survey what foods are available. Choose a smaller plate and choose favorites that you don't get year-round. Fill up the rest of your plate with vegetables and fresh fruits. Once you're done eating, avoid mingling near the food table. Out of sight out of mind!
  5. Give yourself 20 minutes before going for seconds. It might take up to 45 minutes for your brain to recognize that your stomach is full. Enjoy the process by savoring the flavors and textures of your food!
  6. Keep an eye on your alcohol consumption. Drinking can lower your inhibitions and lead to overeating. Additionally, alcohol contains calories that can add up quickly. Always ensure you don't drink on an empty stomach—have a meal first! Consider alternating alcoholic drinks with glasses of water.
  7. Schedule time for exercise. Focus on home-based sessions throughout the week staying active with the family. Activities can be walks or playful games with the kids etc. Go for a walk around your neighborhood to enjoy the holiday decorations!
  8. Be crafty with gifts! Make nonfood gifts to give instead of baking. Suggestions – ornaments, soaps, house decorations, candles, wreaths, bracelets, scarves, cards, etc.
  9. Bring your own healthy dish to a party. Bring enough to share with others! You could try our Roasted Cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts recipe for a great side or our hearty Spiced Lentil and Farro Soup for something cozy.
  10. Remember that gatherings and holidays are not just about food. Focus on family, friends, laughter, and good cheer! Being present for your loved ones is truly a gift in and of itself during this season of giving.
