Motivation and Inspiration to Get Healthy

We often look to our doctors, nurses and providers for guidance when it comes to our health and general well-being, so what do providers do in their own lives to ensure they are living their healthiest best?

Last year, we welcomed 70 new providers to our organization to help meet the needs of our growing Eastside community. Below, we share a collection of some of the most motivating and inspiring insights they live by, to help you reach your own health goals in 2018.

What keeps them motivated?

"I simply feel better when I exercise. I also love to eat, and exercise makes everything taste better!"
- Kristina Mitchell, MD | EvergreenHealth Pulmonary Care

"Everyone struggles maintaining healthy habits at times, but I find motivation in my children. I want to model good habits for them, so they will lead healthy lives. I also want to preserve my health so I can enjoy them for many years."
- Jennifer Lee, MD | EvergreenHealth Pain Care

"I stay active to help avoid future injuries, so I can stay healthy and keep doing the things I love."
- Katie Hall, PA-C | EvergreenHealth Orthopedic & Sports Care

"Simply put, three things motivate me: myself, my family, and my patients. I know that I need to take care of myself first, so that I can be at my best to take care of others. I want to show my children that eating healthy / 'body' foods and engaging in frequent activity is a way of life. I believe this is an important example to set for my patients as well, as it is my duty and my calling to encourage others to make healthy decisions for themselves on a daily basis."
- Jordan Collier, DO | EvergreenHealth Primary Care, Redmond

"My family is my motivation. By exercising and eating nutritious foods, I am maximizing the chance that I will live long to enjoy my children and grandchildren, and for my wife and me to continue to enjoy activities we love. Also, there is no substitute for modeling healthy behavior to help ensure that my kids will grow up healthy and strong."
- Marco Salazar, MD, PhD | EvergreenHealth Urology & Urogynecology Care

What words inspire them?

“A body in motion tends to stay in motion.” - Sir Isaac Newton
- Amanda Cox, ARNP | EvergreenHealth Primary Care, Woodinville

“Strength doesn’t come from what you can do; it comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.” - Rikki Rogers

- Diego Lopez de Castilla | EvergreenHealth Infectious Disease Care

“And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life you count in your years.” - Abraham Lincoln
- Kevin Herron, MD | EvergreenHealth Primary Care, Lakeshore Bothell

“So many people spend their health gaining wealth, and then have to spend their wealth to regain their health.” - A.J. Reb Materi
- Shane Egresi, PA-C | EvergreenHealth Heart & Vascular Care

"Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” - Albert Einstein
- Rosanna Yeung, MD | EvergreenHealth Radiology Oncology

"My favorite poem is 'Invictus' by William Ernest Henley. Its message of perseverance is motivating in challenging times."
- Joe Woodward, MD | EvergreenHealth Hand Surgery

What do they do:

"Every morning, imagine what your day would look like if you were doing everything you could to be healthy. Imagine the perfect day designed for perfect health. Then try to do a half or a quarter of that, and you will discover that you are well on your way to your health goals."
- Kevin Herron, MD | EvergreenHealth Primary Care, Lakeshore Bothell

"I love Beachbody on Demand (BOD), which is packed full of health tips and exercise programs. All you need to do is dedicate 30 to 60 minutes a day to exercise and nutrition and the health benefits are great."
- Amy Bartnikowski, CNM | EvergreenHealth Obstetrics & Gynecology Care, Coral

"I like to take 20 minutes every evening to lift weights, and I like to get outside and be active with my family every chance I get. Staying strong has helped me keep up with my two young boys!"
- Analisa Armstrong, MD | EvergreenHealth Surgical Care

"Too often, we think of exercise as a chore. Our days are full with work, family, tasks...Sometimes taking a walk or practicing yoga is the only thing we do for ourselves in an entire day! I try to make sure I am taking time for myself and embrace those minutes of self-care."
- Jennifer Lee, MD | EvergreenHealth Pain Care

"I try to focus on doing things I enjoy. I find running enjoyable and therapeutic. I was born into a vegetarian family and returned to these roots later in life. I do believe that traditional home cooking that developed over millennia is likely a good way to live."
- Prakash Varadarajan, MD | Seattle Cancer Care Alliance at EvergreenHealth

"I love high intensity interval training (HIIT), and my current favorite is Insanity: Max 30 by Beachbody. I can do the workouts at home in 30 minutes…who doesn’t have 30 minutes?! Also, my son loves being outside, so we go on walks, when the weather allows, with my husband and our dogs."
- Cara Cook, ARNP | EvergreenHealth Spine & Neurosurgical Care
