Tips for Traveling with Children

The best thing you can do is prepare for any unexpected situations.

Research Your Destination

If you are planning on traveling outside the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a useful research tool to explore prior to your trip. Simply search the country you're traveling to and get immediate results of current health issues as well as recommended vaccines and medications.

Reduce Your Chances of Getting Sick on Vacation

Airports, train stations and public transportation can be a hub for germs. Make sure you continue to wash your hands often and avoid touching your face, especially when you're out and about. If you can't find a place to wash your hands with soap and water, have hand sanitizer on you at all times!

Another way to avoid getting sick while on vacation is to stay hydrated and ensure you are eating fruits and vegetables – especially if you are going somewhere tropical where the fruit is fresh!

Always Carry a Travel Emergency Kit with You

Packing a first aid kit will come in handy for any unexpected sniffles, bumps and pains that may come from a vacation.

Your first aid kit should be supplied with:

  • Band-Aids, cotton swabs, gauze and cotton pads
  • Prescription medications
  • Over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, Benadryl and antibiotic cream.
    • Ask your primary care provider if there are any other suggested over the counter treatments to keep in your first-aid kit.

Prioritize Play and Rest

As parents know, toddlers are full of energy and heading on a vacation with your little one is exciting! With new adventures come new activities, which means that your child may be burning off more energy than they do during their routine days at home.

Keep their bodies moving by having snacks on you to help refuel your little one. There are plenty of nutritious and portable snacks that could easily fit into your backpack or stroller. Need inspiration? Read our article 10 Nutritious and Portable Snacks Under $1.

After a busy day being active, always make sure your child is getting plenty of sleep at night so they can be refreshed and ready for another day of exploring.

Get an Early Start On Jetlag

Depending on where you travel, you may experience jetlag, which is your body's response to entering a new time zone. Whether you are traveling 2 hours ahead or 12 hours ahead, there are ways to conquer jetlag – and it starts days before departure.

  1. Practice early bedtimes: This is easier said than done, especially if you are working fulltime, however you may just thank yourself later for the preparation. Children will feel a lot better on vacation if they've gotten their body clocked into your destination's time zone early.
  2. Jampack your first day: You may feel like relaxing as soon as you get to your hotel, but it's best to keep yourself busy as close to bedtime as possible. This means being outside in the daylight and keeping your body moving.
  3. Continue with your routine: Routine can give your child a sense of control and security while being in a new place. If your child is used to taking a nap after lunch or reading a book before bed, try to continue this routine (except on the local schedule).
