What Causes Night Sweats?

Summer in the Pacific Northwest brings high temperatures, and you may have a hard time getting your room cooled down for a comfortable night's sleep. You may have even woken up in the middle of the night sweating.

You may be agitated by the high temperatures, or you may be experiencing night sweats.

Night sweats are defined as multiple episodes of very heavy sweating during sleep, heavy enough to soak through your clothing or bedding.

While sweating during sleep isn't considered a serious condition, you should consult your primary care provider if your night sweats occur on a regular basis, interrupt your sleep or are accompanied by a fever or other symptoms, such as unexplained weight loss.

Night sweats can be caused by other medical conditions, such as:

  • Menopause – Known as "hot flashes" during the day, night sweats are very common for women going through menopause and are often the first sign.
  • Hormonal disorders – Night sweats can be a symptom of conditions affecting the endocrine system.
  • Anxiety – Stress and emotional conditions can cause sweating during the day and often have the same effect at night.
  • Medication side effect – Some medications can result in an increase of sweating throughout the day and night. Make sure you ask your provider or pharmacist about any side effects before taking your first dose.

If you are experiencing night sweats, try sleeping with light weight pajamas and falling asleep with a fan on you. You should also try a lightweight blanket and avoid certain activities like drinking caffeine, smoking, eating spicy foods or exercising shortly before going to sleep.

Certain lifestyle adjustments can also address your night sweats, including losing weight or practicing strategies to reduce stress.

If you're still having trouble with night sweats, consult your primary care provider. You can find a long-term partner in your medical care by choosing a primary care provider (PCP) at EvergreenHealth.
